Speed Mentoring Summary

Lately we were lucky enough to be exposed to some professionals in the tech industry for feedback and self assessment, and here is a short summary of that great experience!

We spoke about may potential solutions for 2 different approaches to solving this problem; 1. Indirect: habit formation is prevented by some variable, OR, 2. Direct: we need to create optimal conditions/manipulations to form habits, and mixed all of them together into one object. We presented a confused image of process more than of our goal: Research intendo wii - a company that tried to do what you’re describing and failed A “thesis on compliance”Yair Halevi (Spock)

Mentor: Itay Pries

What feedback is the user receiving from the product?

The target audience needs to be more limited - segment (young parents, full-time job etc.)

You need to consider all the options and see what’s best for you

Camera vs sensor?

Monitoring vs social vs game (reinforcement)-  מה ידרבן אותך?

Check whether the “dead time” during the commercials can be utilized for practicing time?

** The economy as a whole loses money from injury, slow recovery and ineffective maintenance/prevention of recurring injury

Consider looking into:

  • Behavioural economics

  • Types of reinforcement

Mentor: Mor Shani

  • You need to find one technological feature that is impressive enough that SHOWS the improvement

  • Like improvement on an axis of movement

  • Show don’t tell - the difference between an object and a reinforcement calendar/tracker

  • List the features you want and rank them according to importance and difficulty of development

  • Think about a meaningful technological feature that can make a big impact between the user and the physiotherapist.

  • Consider branding your object more like yoga and wellness than rehabilitation

Mentor: Yair Halevi (Spock)

  • The target audience needs to be more limited - segment (young parents, full-time job etc.)

  • Treat the development of this object as a controlled experiment

  • How do we answer the question best NOT how do we build the best product

  • A “thesis on compliance”

  • Focus on one challenge (pain/ boredom/ busy - pain is most interesting) ⇒ the function will dictate the form factor

  • Think about how to deliver the pain (example: the object will record the user when he says something hurts him during the exercise)

Mentors: Chagit Alon & Liron (JOY Ventures)

  • Research intendo wii - a company that tried to do what you’re describing and failed

  • We understand the product as a tracker but what is gained by it being a seperate object and not a phone?

  • You are talking about another screen not an object

Our Takeaways:

  • If we remain with the screen object we should consider referring to it as a mirror rather than a screen that shows your improvement

  • We presented a confused image of process more than of our goal:

  • We spoke about may potential solutions for 2 different approaches to solving this problem; 1. Indirect: habit formation is prevented by some variable, OR, 2. Direct: we need to create optimal conditions/manipulations to form habits, and mixed all of them together into one object.

  • We need to choose one approach and within that approach, focus on creating the best form of one solution!

  • The one solution that we choose needs to be tested to see that it helps people form a habit whether directly or indirectly

  • Ex. if we decide that habit formation is prevented because of some variable (pain boredom busy), we need to choose the variable we are addressing, let’s say pain and develop a solution specifically for the perception of pain, such as psychoeducation or exposure, and measure whether this reduction in ineffective perceptions of pain produces more physical therapy training and habit formation.

  • The object we create might have features that record and measure but the most important feature is one that would SHOW, immediately, some improvement from training, making the intangible tangible.

Where we are now:

We are considering building an object with the metaphor of wilting vs blooming plant or of a proud vs embarrassed posture that provides a mirror to your habit’s strength, rather than the quality of your training. We think that if an empathetic bond is reached with this object it could provide a sort of social reinforcement on in its own right (anthropomorphism). This would fall under a solution for creating optimal conditions for habit development.
